Loading your storage unit

Loading your storage unit

  • Place cartons, filing cabinet, seasonal clothing and items that you may need to access towards the front of the unit.
  • Try and leave a small space around the perimeter of your storage unit and across the top for air circulation.
  • Look Up!  Try to use all of the space available to you, including the height.
  • Fill cartons to the edges with packing – no gaps inside – to stop them collapsing when stacked. Overloading cartons may cause bulging or make cartons too hard to lift.
  • If tables won’t disassemble, place a mat or protective cardboard on the ground and lay the tabletop face down on the floor with the legs pointing up.
  • Cover furniture with sheets or blankets to protect against dust. Never place 2 leather surfaces together without a thick, breathable barrier between.
  • Don’t place heavy or sharp objects on top of upholstered furniture. Stack lighter boxes on top of the heavier boxes.
  • Never lay paintings or mirrors flat. Ensure they are wrapped or placed in proper picture/mirror cartons and stand on edges.
  • To ensure safe storage: Do not store anything combustible (i.e. paint thinners, fuel, solvents, turps, chlorine, hay, gas bottles, etc.) Flammable goods are prohibited
  • Do not store any living things (including plants) or perishable goods (especially foodstuffs). Perishable goods are prohibited
  • Empty petrol from mowers, whipper snippers, etc. and do not store fuel cans.
  • Ensure your microwave and BBQ are clean to ensure pests are not attracted to your unit. Put something under the BBQ, just in case
  • Make sure your fridge is fully defrosted, clean and dry and store with the door ajar so it doesn’t go mouldy.
  • Ensure your washing machine has been completely drained and secure the hoses up at the top of the machine.
  • In humid climates: Maintain a “Moisture collector/absorber” inside your unit. Only cover mattresses with breathable covers (e.g quilt cover, fitted sheets).
