Kids first

  • Tell kids where and when you are moving – Be positive and excited; kids need time to get used to the idea
  • Explain why you are moving – Dad changed jobs; close to sick grandparents; access TAFE or UNI
  • Re-assure children about familiar things being available in the new location – Bigger room for themselves, better school, great sporting/clubs to continue their interests, take pets, able to stay in touch with friends
  • Get them involved and ensure they feel an important part of the ‘moving team’ – Ask them for ideas on how to make it easier and tell them their contribution to the effort will be greatly appreciated, however small
  • Welcome their questions – Good communication will ease their doubts and fears …..  and help you
  • Be mindful of your emotions – Kids will think it’s their fault if you are cranky or short tempered
